Another day, another racer from Black Bean and Milestone, it seems. The team behind two superbike-based titles (SBK 09 and Moto GP) are weighing in with their take on the Superstars V8 Racing series. I have to admit, I had no idea what the Supercars V8 championship is and despite a quick search on Google and Wikipedia, I still don’t. According to the game, ex-Formula One pack-chaser Gianni Morbidelli won the last two championships – and that’s handy, since he’s the only driver in the game that I’ve ever heard of. For the layman, think TOCA – but maybe a tad faster.

Opposition drivers seem to brake an hour and a half before they need to when approaching any corner, and then have a noticeable reluctance to accelerate once they’re back on the straight and narrow. This means that effectively you can just pootle along, brake at the correct time, take a massively incorrect line around a corner and STILL end up overtaking easily – before burning away up the straight to put a gap between you and your opposition. In addition to this, the opposition don’t seem to really care about anything other than sticking to the racing line, meaning that they’ll (occasionally, but rarely) overtake you on a straight and then hammer back across the course to the racing line way too early, barging their rear bumper into your front tyres, causing you (and oftentimes, themselves) to spin off the track.

Need for Speed Underground 2 tries to inject a story into your career mode using static-image cutscenes that pop up before some races. The effect is similar to what the Max Payne series does with its noninteractive sequences, though that game pulls it off much better than Need for Speed Underground 2 does. Dopey story short, you're sent off to a new town after getting ambushed by a rival racing crew, and you'll have to start from scratch with one car and a handful of races to get you going.

Though there are three different difficulty settings for the career mode, none of them put up a particularly good fight. As a result, most of the races simply boil down to getting in front of the opposition and then doing what you can to not make a mistake. Between nitrous boosts and drafting, gaining the lead isn't very difficult, and the game doesn't seem to employ any heavy rubber-band AI routines to retake the lead from you, so you can usually stay in front without any trouble at all. Need for Speed Underground 2's crashes are laughably weak. While high-speed collisions with other cars trigger a slow-motion, cinematic shot of the crash, the game doesn't model any damage at all. It's like you're watching two plastic car models bump up against each other, accompanied by the sounds of an actual car crash. While it practically goes without saying that modeling damage in a game with licensed cars is still a tricky proposition, that fact doesn't make these wrecks look any better. Fortunately, the game's car customization features somewhat make up for this lack of visual detail.

Except for the Pro-Circuit mode, the game is completely free form in structure. If you're looking for a track-by-track competition on the courses, you won't get it to the extent you'd like in Motocross Madness 2. The game definitely makes up for it with customizability, and once you get your head around the number of options you can tweak, you'll be more than satisfied with the overall experience. Once you get the hang of it, it's easy to set up a race or series of races with other computer riders, pick the number of laps, and the engine limit that you feel comfortable with.

The Baja, Nationals and Supercross races are just as addictive as the original game, but look even better. Of all the game names in all the land, Velvet Assassin is one of the most bizarre I've heard. Formerly known as Sabotage, the folks at Gamecock decided to change the name upon hearing that Pandemic's stealth-action game was going by the name of Saboteur. In fear of destroying the minds of consumers everywhere, they settled on Velvet Assassin. While you do play a stealthy killer, your name isn't Velvet, nor do you dawn any velvety garb. At least not in the level that I was shown during the demo Gaming Of Velvet Assassin.

There was one portion of Velvet Assassin, however, where the soft and silky substance worn by so many pimps the world over made its way into the gameplay. As anyone who has been following our coverage knows, Velvet Assassin is similar to Splinter Cell in several ways. First, you won't be running in guns blazing. Velvet is all about going the stealthy route, sneaking up behind your prey and then using one of the more than 50 execution moves on them. While there are gun fights, just like in Splinter Cell, you won't (or at least, you shouldn't) find yourself up against insurmountable odds while ducking behind pieces of cover and blindfiring over it. Any baddies that you manage to bag will need to be dragged into the darkness to remain unseen.
